Hanagan ‘Very Confident’ about Taghrooda Partnership

Paul Hanagan, who was injured in a fall at Glorious Goodwood last month, has been readying his return to the saddle in preparation for the Darley Yorkshire Oaks on Thursday, where he is set to partner Epsom Oaks and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Taghrooda.

The two-time Champion jockey, who had been enjoying a good year, fractured his left arm when White Nile fell, but his recovery has been going well and is relishing his comeback opportunity on Taghrooda, who he has ridden the filly to all three of her wins this year, just three weeks after his injury.

Trained by John Gosden for Hamdan Al Maktoum, Taghrooda took her unbeaten record to four from four after an impressive win in the King George VI at Ascot, after which she was made 4-1 favourite by Bet365 Bet365 for the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in October. The three year old filly has without a doubt proved her worth this year, with no other horse being able to beat her.

The Arc is Taghrooda’s end-of-season (and potentially end-of-career) target, and is likely to be her toughest. But first the filly must take on the Yorkshire Oaks, the day two highlight of York’s Ebor meeting.

She is a massively short 2-7 favourite with bet365 to take out the race, with her closest competitors out at 10-1 (Tapestry and Venus De Milo). Volume, Tasaday (14-1), Talent, and Lustrous (33-1) round out the field.

Hanagan believes she can easily live up to her expectations: “the good thing about her is she is very straightforward, she has a great attitude and she has a big engine. She can go very quick and I would be very confident with her.

“No matter what happens at York I hope she will go to run in the Arc. I’m looking forward to her and she gives you as lot of confidence.”

But first Hanagan will make an appearance in Wednesday’s Juddmonte International as he partners Coral-Eclipse winner Mukhadram.

“I think Mukhadram is a bit like Taghrooda,” Hanagan added, speaking to Radio Yorkshire. “He is very straightforward and has a great attitude.

“He is uncomplicated as he races on or near the pace while Australia needs more luck in running. However, Australia is a very good horse and if I finish anywhere near him I will be happy.”

Mukhadram is an 11-2 shot for the International Stakes at Bet365 Bet365.

The four day Yorkshire Ebor Festival kicks off today. If you’ve got a lot of races to follow, make sure you place your bets at bet365 – the best bonus bookmaker – and you’ll receive an initial free bet to the value of £200, which is sure to get your betting off to a winning start.
